Happy Holidays from RCD

2006 has been one of the most exciting years for RCD. We celebrated the completion of 5 projects that provides housing for 201 households in the cities of Alameda, Berkeley, Castro Valley, Fairfield, and Oakland. We hosted our 22nd Anniversary party raising over $95,000 in sponsorships. And, we expanded our Resident Services Department to serve 30 RCD properties with the goal of better serving our tenants. As the year ends, RCD is committed more than ever to continuing our mission in 2007 of serving those with the fewest options. We hope you enjoy this newsletter. It highlights some of our more recent accomplishments. From the RCD staff and Board, we wish you and your families a happy holiday season!

Coming Home – Margaret Breland opens its doors: RCD isn’t afraid of a challenge. After unanticipated issues caused delays to the project, Margaret Breland Homes overcame them all and opens its doors just in time for the holidays. Residents have already moved into the project and expressed their excitement over the open, airy design and amazing views of the bay and hills. The property consists of 28 units for low-income seniors on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley. Stay tuned for the Grand Opening celebration notice.

Caminar, Inc. provides specialized onsite social services for the residents.

Harrison Hotel Apartments: Rehabilitation work completed August 2006. RCD initially purchased and rehabilitated the hotel in 1994, and secured $5.6 million in funding from the State of California to complete extensive renovations of the building in 2006. The Harrison Hotel Apartments includes 81 units with supportive services for low-income individuals with disabilities and formerly homeless in Oakland. The project is one of Alameda County’s largest resources of housing for homeless, disabled individuals.

RESIDENT SERVICES BLURB
Garden Party at MLK House: Residents living at MLK House in Berkeley now have a garden to tend to thanks to Denise Misiph of Hands On Bay Area, a volunteer service organization, and ten UC Berkeley students. The groups created a small community garden that could be utilized and tended to by the MLK House resident community. A special avocado tree was planted in memory of former resident Shirley Hill. RCD sends a special thank you to Denise for her fantastic work and to the UC Berkeley students and residents who participated in making this garden grow.

BBQ, Police and Candy – Sounds like a party!: For the third year, RCD, the Concord Police Department, and the Camara Circle residents celebrated “National Night Out” with a community barbeque, music, and piñata breaking! The goals were to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships while generating support for local anticrime programs. And, of course, to party with friends and meet new people in the community!
