State loan to help build dwellings for people at-risk

by Jay Howser, The Daily Republic (7/3/03)

FAIRFIELD -- Residents with mental disabilities and others at risk of becoming homeless could soon benefit from a new apartment complex for people with special needs.

The California Department of Housing awarded a loan of more than $1.6 million to Laurel Gardens Partners Wednesday to build the 30-unit complex on Alaska Avenue.
Called Laurel Garden Apartments, it would help tenants with job training and placement, money management, substance abuse treatment and other services.

Caminar-CLC, a service provider for residents with mental illnesses, teamed with a group called Resources for Community Development to form Laurel Gardens Partners.

The state loan comes through the Multifamily Housing Program, which offers low-interest, deferred-payment loans for new construction and rehabilitation of housing projects throughout the state.

Assemblywoman Lois Wolk, D-Davis, was pleased that the state's Department of Housing recognized the need for many different kinds of housing in California, she said.

" This project is especially important to the mentally disabled and will provide them with a variety of supportive services," Wolk said in a written statement.
