Affordable Housing for Oakland Families – Northgate Grandview Apartments Contact: Nicole Boucher (510) 841-4410 x11 Grand Opening in Oakland With the support of the City of Oakland and the Telegraph-Northgate Neighborhood Association, RCD transformed a vacant lot into an architecturally stunning five-story building. The apartments on each housing floor surround a spacious courtyard with seating, creating the feeling of an “urban village”. The first floor contains a private parking garage with double-stacked car lifts, as well as a laundry room. In addition to these amenities are two community rooms and a children’s play area, which encourages residents to create strong community ties. A model for sustainable development, Northgate Apartments contributes to Mayor Jerry Brown’s 10k Housing Initiative and helps meet the need for stable, affordable housing for families in Oakland. Easy access to AC Transit and BART lines, retail and grocery markets make the building an ideal location for residents. Northgate Apartments also houses a City Carshare pod for the use of tenants and people that live and work in the neighborhood. In addition, the project is also a showcase green building for the City of Oakland and a case study development of the Green Affordable Housing Coalition. Speakers at the opening will include Mayor Jerry Brown, City Council members Nancy Nadel and Henry Chang, City of Oakland Housing Director Roy Schweyer and Northgate residents. There will also be a Tile Painting Workshop for residents and guests, which will be used to create a mural at the buildings main entry. RCD is an experienced nonprofit developer of affordable housing serving the East Bay, with the mission of creating and preserving affordable housing for people with the fewest options. Formed in 1984, RCD, has a portfolio of approximately 970 units that serve very low and low-income households and special needs groups, including the homeless, people with disabilities, survivors of domestic violence and people living with HIV/AIDS. Funding for Northgate Apartments was provided by state and federal tax credits, the National Equity Fund, Affordable Housing Program/Federal Home Loan Bank and City of Oakland and City of Oakland Redevelopment Agency Funds.
