Contact: Andrea Cohen (510) 841-4410 x22

Grand Opening in Berkeley
Resources for Community Development (RCD) is pleased to announce the grand opening celebration for Adeline Street Apartments on Thursday, June 26, 2003 from 3:30 to 5:00 P.M. Adeline Street Apartments provides nineteen units of affordable housing to low-income physically disabled persons in South Berkeley.

In 1998, RCD began working on Adeline Street Apartments, foreseeing the project as a catalyst for revitalization in South Berkeley. This area of Berkeley has suffered from neighborhood blight and a poor economic base. Five years later, after months spent securing financing, doing community outreach and working with the City of Berkeley officials through the project approval process, Adeline Street Apartments is complete. This project adds a beautifully-designed, fully-accessible building to the area. The property has experienced property management and ownership (RCD) operating the building, community and common space for community events, and a social services coordinator providing service referrals to residents.

Located at 3222-3224 Adeline Street, the façade is a striking storefront exterior that accentuates the neighborhood architectural style. The architect, Erick Mikiten of Mikiten Architecture, designed Adeline Street Apartments to blend in with the historic context of the surrounding neighborhood. The use of quality building materials and historic design features such as bay windows, large windows, and roof brackets create a beautiful building. The construction was completed by Brown Construction of Sacramento.

The building’s amenities include an on-site resident manager’s unit, manager’s office, laundry room, community room, a parking garage, elevator, automatic door openers, and a shared outdoor garden terrace. All units include fully accessible doorways, kitchens, dining areas, closets, bathrooms, and bedrooms. The entire development is fully accessible. The building also contains a commercial space on the first floor which will be occupied by Lazarus Studio for Hair.

Adeline Street Apartments consists of nineteen units including 2 studio, 10 one-bedroom, 6 two-bedroom, and 1 three-bedroom units. All units will be affordable to disabled persons at 50% or less of the Area Median Income.

The residents of Adeline Street Apartments have full access to social services. RCD’s Director of Services will provide individualized service referrals to residents including links to employment, financial services, and health care. Additionally, Catholic Charities will provide services for HOPWA eligible residents.

RCD is an experienced nonprofit developer of affordable housing serving Contra Costa, Alameda and Solano Counties. Formed in 1984, RCD has a portfolio of approximately 900 units of affordable housing, with over 400 units in development. RCD properties include housing for seniors, families, disabled persons and homeless households.

Speakers at the Opening include Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates and Linda Gardner, Housing Director at Alameda County Housing and Community Development. RCD staff, local officials and staff and residents will be available for interviews.

The project received funding from the following: The City of Berkeley; Alameda County; The Federal Home Loan Bank’s Affordable Housing Program; Low Income Housing Tax Credits; US Bancorp Affordable Housing CDC; the HUD Section 108 Loan Program; the Berkeley Housing Authority Project Based Section 8 Program; a Bank of America Construction Loan; and a Local Initiatives Support Corporation Construction Loan.
