RCD Celebrates Grand Opening of Laurel Gardens on July 20, 2006 Contact: Shauna Porteus (510) 841-4410 ext. 11 Resources for Community Development, in partnership with Caminar/CLC, opens a new affordable housing development in Solano County. The complex includes 30 units with extensive onsite supportive services provided by Caminar to low-income individuals with disabilities and the formerly homeless. The project site is located within the City of Fairfield's North Texas Redevelopment Area. Located west of North Texas Street at 201E. Alaska Avenue, the Laurel Gardens Apartments consists of 30 residents units serving permanent housing for persons with disabilities. The 30-unit development is fully leased. The apartment complex consists of 14 two-bedrooms, 13 one-bedrooms, and 3 studio apartments, with community and recreational space located on-site. Twenty-one of the 30 units use project-based Section 8 subsidies that will enable tenants to pay 30% of their gross income toward rent, and eight units are subsidized by the Housing and Urban Development Supportive Housing Program for formerly homeless and disabled individuals. “"The City is very proud to participate in this important project. When Caminar and RCD approached us with their proposal to develop Laurel Gardens, a 30-unit special needs housing project, we felt it provided a continuum of care for Caminar's clients, as well as other special needs households, that was missing in our community," remarks Sean Quinn, director of community development for the City of Fairfield. “"This is the first newly constructed apartment project for people with disabilities and includes a strong service component to its residents. The project is well designed and provides affordable housing and services to its residents. The City looks forward to working with Caminar and RCD on more affordable housing projects in the future."” Caminar and RCD have developed a comprehensive supportive service plan to cultivate self-sufficiency among tenants, and an apartment design that is secure, enhances community building among tenants, and integrates into the neighborhood. Services are tailored on a programmatic basis for the unique needs of formerly homeless and disabled individuals who are prepared to live independently. Caminar/CLC provides case managers to assure that tenants have complete access to a variety of services that meet tenants' needs. Participating residents will also receive job training through Caminar's Job Plus Program. Funding for this project was provided by the City of Fairfield, the Enterprise Social Investment Corporation, the State HOME Program, the State Multifamily Housing Program, the Housing and Urban Development Supportive Housing Program, Wells Fargo Bank, and the Corporation for Supportive Housing.
