FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Affordable Housing for Oakland Families – Grand Opening of Eastmont Apartments

Contact: Jenny Mick (510) 841-4410 ext. 10

This Thursday, Resources for Community Development, East Oakland Community Development Corporation, and the City of Oakland will hold a grand opening celebration for the Eastmont Court Apartments in Oakland.

Back in June of 2003, a controversial decision by Oakland City Council awarded money to the Eastmont Court affordable housing development. At its inception, Eastmont Court Apartments was the first affordable housing project in Northern California created specifically for people with physical and developmental disabilities. After two and a half years of work, opposition by the Oakland City Council would have put a stop to project’s progress. On one side of the debate, opponents had argued that this development would add to the already high concentration of low-income individuals in the area. On the other side, proponents of the development argued that this blighted area would benefit from a much needed housing development.

The 19-unit Eastmont development located at 6850 Foothill Boulevard in Oakland was seen to completion and will celebrate its grand opening on Thursday, June 9th between 3:30 and 5:30 pm. The Eastmont project is designed to meet the specific needs of individuals with a variety of physical disabilities, ranging from wheelchair users to frail convalescent individuals. Formerly a vacant lot, the 19 apartments will consist of 9 one-bedroom units and 10 two-bedroom units, including an on-site resident manager’s unit.

This celebration will be hosted by Resources for Community Development (RCD), in partnership with East Oakland Community Development Corporation (EOCDC). RCD is an experienced nonprofit developer of affordable housing serving the East Bay with the mission of creating and preserving affordable housing for people with the fewest options. Formed in 1984, RCD serves very low and low-income households and special needs groups, including homeless, people with disabilities, survivors of domestic violence and people living with HIV/AIDS.

Funding for the Eastmont Apartments was provided by HUD Section 811 funding, the City of Oakland, and the Federal Home Loan Bank’s Affordable Housing Program. For more information about the event, please contact Jenny Mick at (510) 841-4410, ext. 10.
