6850 Foothill Blvd., Oakland, CA Eastmont Court provides 19 units for disabled, very low-income households and is the only housing in East Oakland specifically designated for physically disabled individuals. Despite being the only project in Northern California to receive funding from the federal HUD 811 program, a very competitive program that funds housing for people with physical disabilities, political opposition threatened to halt the project mid-way through construction. RCD's strong community outreach to neighbors, local businesses, and city council members ultimately prevailed and the project was completed. The project contributed to neighborhood stabilization by filling in a vacant corner lot with an attractive building that enhances the architectural character of the streetscape and will hopefully attract new residents to the neighborhood and increase business for local merchants. Eastmont Court is the third project that RCD and East Oakland Community Development Corporation have collaborated on in East Oakland. The team has been working together since 1999.
