Alameda, CA
39 units of permanent housing for homeless individuals.
1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom units
Construction began July 2008

Estimated completion date October 2009

Shinsei Gardens is a 39-unit supportive housing rental project serving formerly homeless veterans with special needs. Three separate, 2-story buildings surround a large central courtyard and children's play area.  All units are universally designed for accessibility with features such as accessible wall heights for outlets and light fixtures, removable cabinets under kitchen sinks, and front controls on stovetops.  When complete, the project is expected to earn a very high LEED "green building" rating, reflecting the environmentally friendly construction and materials used throughout.  RCD has worked closely with the Alameda County Housing Authority, Operation Dignity, Alameda Point Collaborative, and the City of Alameda throughout the development process. RCD also worked closely with Catellus Development Corporation, developer of the surrounding sites, to ensure a good fit in this neighborhood on the former Naval Base.  The project is just a short distance from Alameda Community College, an elementary school, a park, public transportation, stores, and other community resources.
