She is also quite active as a tenant at Mabel Howard. Tanya was one of the driving forces in forming the Tenants Association and is also a proud member of RCD’s Board of Directors. She takes her work very seriously and believes that it is imperative that tenants have a voice: “Often times, housing authorities, while well-intentioned, do not really understand the issues that we face, the realities that we live with. That is why it is so important that a tenants voice be heard at all levels of development, so that they can better respond to our needs. ” She finds her position on RCD’s Board to be one of her most fulfilling responsibilities: “When I go to RCD board meetings, I feel that my presence is needed and that it is respected. They let me know that my contributions to the meetings are vital in providing adequate services to seniors, and that is very important to me. ” Tanya also feels that the housing that RCD has provided for her and other seniors has played an essential role in the stability and well being of Mabel Howard tenants: “It’s very difficult for seniors to find affordable housing that provides services and activities that meet the needs of the frail elderly. In addition, it can also be a very painful transition into senior housing. Many of us have been uprooted from our homes and families and need to learn how to navigate a new city, as well as make friends and find fulfilling activities in our spare time. RCD has taken all of these elements into account and works hard to provide wonderful services and affordable housing at Mabel Howard. RCD’s efforts makes this transition so much easier, and as residents, we are so thankful and so happy to be here.” We at RCD feel that her work is invaluable, and are just as thankful for her diligence in housing advocacy and dedication to her community. It is always a pleasure to work with her, and we look forward to her future contributions to RCD developments.
