| History
Founded in 1984 by concerned Berkeley community members, Resources For Community Development (RCD) is a nonprofit affordable housing development corporation dedicated to creating and preserving affordable housing for people with the fewest options, enriching lives and building communities. RCD is committed to providing affordable housing for the most marginalized people in the San Francisco East Bay area, including homeless individuals and families, developmentally and physically disabled children and adults, people living with HIV/AIDS, and extremely low-income, large families.
Once considered a small, Berkeley-based nonprofit affordable housing developer, RCD is now highly regarded as an experienced regional provider of both affordable special needs and family housing. During its initial years, RCD worked within the southern and western neighborhoods of Berkeley, developing long-term affordable housing while building community support and technical experience. RCD began expanding its reach beyond the boundaries of Berkeley by the early 1990s, and currently has nearly 40 projects totaling over 1,400 units throughout Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano Counties.
This expanding geographic base, coupled with a professional and dedicated staff, has led to rapid growth in the organization over the past 4 years and has given RCD the opportunities to take on larger development projects. Currently, RCD has 420 units in construction or predevelopment in the cities of Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley, Alameda, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Walnut Creek, and Vacaville.
RCD remains firm in its commitment and dedication to create affordable housing that fits the needs of the communities it serves. As a leading non-profit affordable housing developer in the East Bay we continue to move ahead to put as many affordable housing units online as possible. It’s our mission.
